How much can I make?

This is the first question, because it's really the first thing on your mind. Of course, as a commissioned employee, the amount you earn can depends on how hard you work. Let's do the math.... If you do only two $20 or $25 (prices are different in each location) haircuts an hour at 50% commission, you earn $20 to $25 per hour, plus your tips. That's a good average if you only do one haircut every thirty minutes. Our employees typically earn between $30 and $40 per hour (sometimes more on very busy days). We're proud to say we have barbers who have managed other shops, but make more with us! Want to earn between $35,000 and $65,000 per year working only four days per week!? Then come work for us!

Is AMERICAN HAIRCUTS® a real barbershop?

Yes, AMERICAN HAIRCUTS® is a real barbershop, licensed as such by the State of Georgia. We have actual barber chairs and perform the traditional barbershop services (neck shaves, face shaves, hot towels, etc.). That said, we're not some hole in the wall that never sweeps the floors. We're a real barbershop, but we've raised the bar. We spent more on our chairs, stations, and decor than most typical barbershops and we keep our shop clean and sanitary at ALL times. We have a full-time person who checks in clients (yeah, we've got a computer), sweeps, folds towels, and answers the phone. This makes your job easier and allows you to make more money because you don't have to do much besides cut hair. AMERICAN HAIRCUTS® is the kind of place you can feel proud to work.

Is AMERICAN HAIRCUTS® a franchise?

No. We're an independent shop and not part of a chain or franchise. If fact, our "corporate office" is the spare bedroom in Dave's house. While we may open more shops, we will not franchise our concept. Many think we are a franchise because we don't look like a typical "mom and pop." We have a well thought out look, logo, website, and nice looking display materials. We're all so detail oriented that we paid close attention to every aspect of our image. That shows in the way our shop looks and in the way we treat our clients. The problem with working for many franchises is that the franchisees (owners) aren't barbers or stylists and don't "get it" about working with barbers. We're in the shop every day cutting hair, so we get what it's like. We'll never ask you to do anything we aren't willing to do. As a matter of fact, two of our owners work as barbers in the shop at the same rate of pay as everyone else (the third owner is our manager/receptionist). That said, while we're not a franchise we do have policies that we all must follow to keep the shop running smoothly and ensure consistent quality. We don't run our shop like "Mr. Crusty's Barbershop" around the corner. The result is that our clients keep coming back and you make more money!

Do you do chair rentals?

No. Everyone who works for us is an employee who receives a paycheck. More on that in the paragraphs to come...

Do you pay cash?

No, you receive a paycheck. You do, of course, make cash tips which you take home each day. Many old-school barbershops pay cash and/or do chair rentals because they don't want to fool with payroll checks, taxes, and such. We have a payroll service that handles that for us. You receive a regular paycheck and taxes are paid. We also pay the employer's portion of Social Security and payroll taxes (which you would have to pay as a chair renter or independent contractor). What this means is that you don't have to worry about a big tax bill at the end of the year or about sending in quarterly tax payments. Most accountants will tell you that it's much more to your advantage to be an employee than an independent contractor. At AMERICAN HAIRCUTS®,we will always run our operation legally (which many barbershops don't do) for our protection and yours.

What percentage do you pay?

We pay 50% - 60% (higher if you perform better). Keep in mind that our haircuts are more expensive (a haircut is $20 or $25 (depending on the location) and a haircut and shave combo is $50 or $75). Some barbershops pay a higher percentage, but are less busy and charge less for their haircuts. The bottom line is that there a very few places where you'll earn more than you will with us. 50% to 60% of a $20 or $25 haircut in a busy shop is MUCH better than 60% to 70% of a $15 haircut in a dumpy little shop with no walk-in traffic.

Additionally, our location was chosen for great visibility and income - which increases our business. You won't be working in some bad strip mall fighting some barber who's been there for 100 years for the few walk-ins who may come by each day. We promote our shop so there's plenty of new business to go around! Our shop also employs non-haircutting staff members who assist in cleaning, answering phones, managing our waiting list, and folding towels and sweeping. This enhances our professional image, which increases our client retention and referral and helps grow the business (which means you make more money). Because of the added costs of location, marketing, and additional staffing, it costs us a great deal more to run our shop than most other barbershops. So, we think our commission percentage is fair. You will earn a better living with us. It's that simple.

What is the dress code?

Our clients are mostly business people, so we dress accordingly. We don't wear t-shirts, shorts, blue jeans or athletic wear. A button down shirt and khaki pants are good, comfortable choices. We're not stuffy, but we do keep a professional appearance!

What hours will I work?

Most of our barbers only work four days, open to close (although some work five and some work only one or two). Saturday's are a must and we're closed on Sunday. Our hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We close early on Friday and Saturday and offer schedules that allow you to have a life and still make a good living. The only day we're not flexible on is Saturday and that's because we're VERY busy.

Will I enjoy working at AMERICAN HAIRCUTS®?

If you don't, there's something wrong with you! We're not afraid to laugh and have fun. We laugh and tell jokes. Our shop is know for it's wacky atmosphere almost as much as it is for the haircuts. Sure, we're professionals, but we realize that people come to the barbershop to relax and enjoy themselves. We tell jokes and enjoy our clients and each other. We have fun. That's what life's all about.
